Tech Mahindra closed its July-September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27) with a net addition of 5,446 employees, taking its total headcount to 152,206, up from 146,760 at the end of the previous quarter. It's the company's highest quarterly hiring number in roughly two years, and it comes at a moment when several large Indian IT services firms are still cutting or barely growing their workforce.
Alongside the hiring jump, Tech Mahindra's attrition rate eased to 11.7% on a last-twelve-months basis, down slightly from 11.8% the previous quarter. Lower attrition paired with stronger net additions is a combination recruiters read as a sign of improving employee retention rather than simply a hiring spree to backfill departures.
Reports on the results note that a meaningful share of the new hires came through campus recruitment at IITs, NITs, and other top engineering institutes — a signal that the company is investing in fresher pipelines even as it reshapes its workforce around margin goals.
The hiring rebound sits inside a broader restructuring Tech Mahindra has been running for the past couple of years, aimed at lifting operating margins that had lagged peers like Infosys and HCLTech. That restructuring has involved account rationalization, cost discipline, and a sharper focus on higher-margin digital and AI-led engagements rather than pure headcount-linked services work — which makes this quarter's net addition notable: it's growth that the company is choosing to add on top of a leaner base, not a return to hiring-for-headcount.
Tech Mahindra's quarter stands out against a mixed picture across Indian IT services in the same period. Some large peers posted strong net additions in Q2 FY27, while others reduced headcount as they continued restructuring. The sector overall has been hiring more cautiously through FY26 and FY27 than in the post-pandemic boom years, making a two-year-high hiring quarter at any single large firm worth watching as a possible early signal of renewed demand.
The next two quarters will show whether this is the start of a sustained hiring uptick for Tech Mahindra or a one-off correction after a slower patch. Either way, it's a useful reminder that headcount trends differ meaningfully company to company, even within the same sector and quarter.
